Where we started


David Kimball embarked on his real estate journey in 1972, initially investing in apartments and land with development potential. One of his early successes was securing an option on the historic Old Miles Hotel, which he transformed into the esteemed Peery Hotel. In 1974, David founded Proctor & Kimball, which he restructured into Kimball Investment Company in 1976 following the acquisition of Proctor’s stake. As Principal Broker of Kimball Investment Company for over 45 years, David ultimately passed the torch to his nephews and son-in-law, ensuring the continuation of his enduring legacy.

With a wealth of experience spanning decades in commercial real estate, David has excelled in a diverse range of areas, including land acquisitions, lease buy-outs, land assemblage, condominium conversions, and the development and management of various property types. His extensive portfolio includes hotels, shopping centers, industrial parks, office buildings, residential subdivisions, and apartment complexes across Utah, Nevada, Texas, Idaho, Montana, and California. 

David is also renowned for his expertise in historic property renovation. In 1985, he breathed new life into the once-neglected Peery Hotel, transforming it into a prestigious boutique property. This remarkable feat earned him accolades from the Salt Lake City Arts Council and the title of “Most Miraculous Conversion” by Utah Holiday Magazine. Additionally, he renovated and managed the historic Judge Building, which remains a distinguished Class A office space in downtown Salt Lake City. 

Beyond renovations, David has developed and operated a variety of hotel franchises in Utah, including Marriott, Hilton, Hampton Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Quality Inn, Choice, Travelodge, and Best Western. His portfolio also includes independent hotels in iconic locations such as Zion National Park, Ojai, Arizona, and several properties throughout Utah, as well as a resort beach property in Oceanside, CA. Currently, David owns two hotels within the Marriott franchise and one within the Hilton franchise.

David and his son-in-law, Jayd Petersen, are the visionary founders of Kimball Development and Management (KDM), a dynamic company at the forefront of real estate development and management. KDM is currently spearheading a wide array of innovative real estate projects while also overseeing an extensive portfolio of properties. In addition to its development initiatives, KDM provides comprehensive property management and accounting services, delivering exceptional support to a diverse range of clients, both current and former. These esteemed clients include notable organizations such as Gardner Company, DonorConnect, and Intermountain Healthcare. Through their expertise and commitment to excellence, David and Jayd have established KDM as a trusted leader in the real estate industry.
